Gumstix Overo

The Gumstix Overo is now available! The Overo Earth, the first model out, is priced at $149. The first available expansion board is The Summit, which s available for $59. That’s pretty cheap considering the price point of past expansion boards and the extreme utility of the Summit. Now, I’m curious as to when we’ll see a production Overo with on-board WiFi and Bluetooth. I don’t know about you but I’m excited!

Gumstix Overo Beta

The Gumstix Overo board has entered of will soon be entering beta. The Overo Documentation on the Gumstix Developer site is an incredible treat for those of us who’ve been salivating over this piece of kit since it was first stubbed on Wikipedia. Also, the Overo Users mailing list appears to setup and ready to go.

With a TI OMAP 3503, 128MB DDR RAM, 256MB NAND Flash, microSD slot, BlueTooth, and WiFi stuffed right onto the motherboard, that’s one hell of a computing package for the size. Check this image for an idea of the kinds of connections that will be possible once the full expansion board line is in production.

Update: Other sites have name the processor as a TI OMAP 3530 as opposed to the 3503. More reading below:

Back Home

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 | Hurricane Ike | No Comments

So, being in Victoria was nice because we had power and groceries and didn’t have to wait an hour to get gas. But it’s damn good to be back in Houston (Alvin actually). Coming home to a house with no damage is just a huge relief. The drive in was a shocking affair - the amount of damage visible from the freeways is incredible. In Alvin the high winds blew over huge metal signs and opened up steel buildings like tin cans. Most of the apartment complexes in town didn’t fair well. The street that leads to my neighborhood is now a boulevard of destruction. But just as startling is the fact that once you get into my neighborhood the only damage is to the fences. None of the houses had any noticable damage. For my fortune, I lost a corner of a shingle and two panels of fence.

Victorian Exile: Generators

Sunday, September 14th, 2008 | Hurricane Ike | No Comments

This morning during the tropical storm-style downpour that dropped 8 inches of rain onto Victoria, TX in a few hours I was out looking for portable generators. A good number of displaced Houstonians had all had the same idea as I saw truck after truck with a generator and several red gas cans. It was astonishing how early all of this started. I was on the road at 8:30 and all the generators in town were sold. Luckily, Lowes and Tractor Supply were replenished during the morning. Hopefully, everyone was able toget what they needed.

Having Fled to Victoria

Saturday, September 13th, 2008 | Hurricane Ike | No Comments

Having fled Hurricane Ike to Victoria, TX we’re safe and sound but feeling a bit displaced. The question now is when do we go back? Will there be power at our house before Melissa’s flight on Tuesday?
